The turn towards adventure in the cycling world has been swift and nearly universal over the last half decade. Gravel races, bike packing epics and even pavement-focused multi-day stage races like those created by the Haute Route have offered up an ethic of riding that’s endemic to its origins. Bikes equal freedom and movement. Peek through our Rooted Vermont Lookbook, a photographic take on an event that happened on roads bisecting the Green Mountain National Forest and you’ll see traces of untracked wilderness in the horizon. Even when a ride doesn’t pedal directly through wilderness, it’s made better by being wilderness adjacent.
Believing in those places means sticking up for them. As members of 1% for the Planet and the Conservation Alliance, we’re putting our money where our mouth is, with 1% of our revenue given annually to environmental causes. In the case of the Conservation Alliance, that money is used to conserve and protect land.
We're taking a step further in 2019 by offering a special edition jersey, inspired by the landscapes over which we traverse, where 100% of the profits will be donated to the Conservation Alliance.
As an aggregator across all kinds of businesses, 1% for the Planet networks nonprofits and businesses to create more support for action and outreach. Originally created by Patagonia founder, Yvon Choinard, 1% envisions a world giving back, protecting and supporting the environment. As an apparel brand, we do damage to the world with many of the textiles, processes and experiences, in part, because there are few alternatives. But being an imperfect environmentalist is better than avoiding outreach.
The Conservation Alliance is a group of like-minded outdoor companies that distributes its collective annual membership dues to grassroots land conservation organizations. Founded in 1989 by outdoor industry leaders REI, Patagonia, The North Face, and Kelty, who shared the goal of increasing outdoor industry support for conservation efforts the Alliance now has more than 235 member companies. Funds from the sale of the 1% jersey will be will disbursed among the larger $2.0 million grants for conservation efforts promised by the Conservation Alliance in 2019.
