For Hugh Mangum, doughnuts became an obsession during the pandemic after his son began experimenting with sourdough. They became a business through cycling.
Rise Doughnuts — the craft doughnut shop Hugh owns with his wife Laura — first began as a pop-up. Through his connections in the local cycling community and his support of Chef's Cycle for No Kid Hungry, Hugh was able to find a kitchen that would allow him to start selling his creations.
With the cycling connection made, and a place to cook, it wasn't long before Rise was selling out.
Hugh isn't a typical cyclist. Nor is he a typical baker. His background instead focuses on BBQ.
On any given day Hugh might be recognized as a regular staple of the Food Network — he's a Chopped champion, a jugde on Beat Bobby Flay, and a member of BBQ Brawl. Outside of doughnuts and BBQ, he's also an advocate of Chef's Cycle for No Kid Hungry.
But in his hometown of Wilton, CT, he's the doughnut guy, either spotted working dough behind the Rise counter, or on his bike riding to work. Everyday. No matter the weather.
2024 marked four years since Hugh and Laura began Rise Doughnuts. Four years of fritters, jam-filled breakfast treats, fresh coffee, and lots of miles in the saddle between work and home.
They aren't showing any signs of stopping.
