Laura Lee Vo is a New York City-based cyclist, an advocate for cycling, and a friend to Velocio. In addition to lending her look to much of our product shots, Laura Lee has ridden for the only sponsored Velocio cycling team, Radical Media, also based in New york. She will lead tours this summer in Europe.
Born in Miami > Moved around the US > NYC since 1995.
Starting next month I will be leading bicycle tours in Provence.
Specialized Tarmac, Focus Mares CX, Cannondale Bad Boy, Electra Cruiser, and soon riding a Trek Domane.
How does cycling fit into your life? How would you explain your relationship with cycling?
Similar to the way bikes “fit” into my small apartment, cycling fits into my life in the form of transportation, exercise, a beloved hobby, it doubles as stress relief and also a cause of stress (racing), it’s my social activity, my meditation, my money pit, and sometimes my work.
Favorite places to ride and why.
I like to ride new routes anywhere. I think it’s the best way to explore. That said, I habitually ride 9W and Central and Prospect parks in New York simply because that is where I am.
Favorite races to ride and why.
I love stage races since they pull together different race formats into a single event, and I like that variety and intensity. One of my favorites is Killington, perhaps among other reasons because it falls on my birthday!
Who do you admire in cycling?
The list is long, but to name a few favorites: Evie Stevens, Marianne Vos,
Eddy Merckx, Fabian Cancellara, Jens Voigt.
What does the future hold for your cycling?
Leading bike tours in Europe and racing when I can.
What does advocacy mean to you? How do you share cycling?
When you really enjoy something, it’s hard not to talk about it all the time (pleading the case, as it were). I guess that’s what it is. Having found cycling to be as exhilarating as it is liberating, I also find myself leading women’s rides, helping with an annual women’s racing clinic, and generally sharing the enthusiasm.
Design or artistic influences. Who compels you?
I’m a big fan of pen and ink, Song Dynasty landscapes (Li Cheng, Fan Kuan) to comic books (from Skottie Young to Ed Brubaker to Gabrielle Bell), with Expressionist woodcuts, and Medieval manuscripts, and typography somewhere in the mix.
Soundtrack to your next ride:
Lord only knows what will be played at the team indoor training session tomorrow night.
Must have media (TV, film, etc.)
Music. Always need good music.
Three things you think folks should know about you:
1. I prefer to have just a few good quality things I’m excited about, rather than a bunch of acceptable stuff I don’t really like all that much.
2. I believe in building a life around people and experiences, and not spending extra time on things I don’t care about beyond what is necessary to be self-sufficient.
3. If I don’t ride my bike regularly I get pretty crabby.
Most liked Velocio piece so far:
I love the Signature Bibs! They are cut in a way that is flattering and comfortable. I like the breathable panel on torso between the straps that functions as a base layer.
